A growing crop of “bloggers calling for fat acceptace” is giving rise to “a virtual soapbox known as the ‘fatosphere,’” reports Roni Caryn Rabin in The New York Times (1/22/08). These bloggers — who include both women and men — “challenge just about everything conventional medical wisdom has to day about obesity … The message from the fatosphere is not just that big is beautiful. Many of the bloggers dismiss the ‘obesity epidemic’ as hysteria. They argue that Americans are not that much larger than they used to be and that being fat in and of itself is not necessarily bad for you.”

Kate Harding, whose blog is called Shapley Prose, starts by attacking the premise that being fat is a choice. “No fat acceptance advocate is saying you should sit around and wildly overeat,” she acknowledges. “What we’re saying is that exercise and a balanced diet do not make everyone thin.” Others point to evidence that overweight people can be healthier than thin people. For example, “recent studies on heart patients and dialysis patients have also reported higher survival rates among heavier patients, suggesting that the link between body size and health may be more complex than generally acknowledged.”

Others point to study of people over 60 that “found that being fit has more bearing on longevity than simply being thin.” But the main argument “is that being fat is not a result of moral failure or a character flaw, or of gluttony, sloth or a lack of willpower,” and that it may have more to do with genetics than anything else. “We accept that some people are short,” says Rachel Richardson, whose blog is called The F-Word. “Yet we seem to think all people should be thin — it just doesn’t make sense.” There’s also a certain feminist streak at work, although at least one blogger, Red No. 3, specializes in the male perspective, and says: “See, I don’t have a problem with fat … My body is simply adorned, and I’ll take that.”

Just a quick note to say hi and goodbye to you all!! I am off today for the next few weeks to celebrate my parents 50th anniversary. We are all flying to Barcelona today and then boarding a ship called Brilliance of the Seas where we will be cruising the Mediterranean for the next few weeks. I am so excited that my entire family will be there to celebrate this milestone together.
At the end of the day….all that we have are our cherished memories of those that we love and have loved. To be able to do this with both of my parents is extraordinary and I am grateful.
I’ll tell you all about it when I return in August…
It should be fantastic…expecially the midnight buffet I’ve heard so much about!!

Hairspray

Hi Gang….as a member in good standing of the Screen Actors Guild, I had the opportunity yesterday to see a screening of the new movie HAIRSPRAY. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED LOVED LOVED IT.
I have always been a fan of the John Waters version with Ricki Lake and Divine….and when it came to Broadway, I must admit that I had some trepidation with how it could possibly adapt. Well, needless to say I loved this version too.
BUT…the best one yet is this. Run….do not walk…to the movie theater!!!!
Every woman of girth, I feel, owes it to themselves to see this film. It is fun, inspiring, uplifting and just a wonderful experience for every single one of us who has ever felt badly about ourselves because of the prejudice that exists out there.
John Travolta is Fantastic!!! Michelle Pfeiffer and Amanda Bynes…perfectly evil (how great is it to have heroines that are plus sized and the boos are earmarked for the perfect blondes!!! YAY) Christopher Walken, always perfect in the roles he plays….James Marsden as Corny exhilirating…Zac Efron as cute as can be ( he is my newest heartthrob other than Brad Pitt, and my beloved husband Steven!!! LOL) Latifah…stunning
BUT HERE’S to the star…Nikki Blonsky…who brings Tracy Turnblad to life again with such zest and sparkle in her eye that I just wanted to hug her and everyone sitting around me in the theater.
Go…grab a soda….an extra large and buttered bag of popcorn and enjoy these two hours. We deserve them!!!

Mauritania! What a country!

I am seriously thinking about going to Mauritania!! Yup…I am!!
I just received the latest edition of one of my most favorite magazines, The National Enquirer, and there it was…..on the last page of the May 21st edition. The Headline read in bold letters: “FAT GIRLS RULE!! In this country men love PLUS-SIZED women”.
“How great is this”…I think to myself “but where is it?”
In Africa, the article mentions. Well I have ALWAYS wanted to go to AFRICA so this gives me a chance to go somewhere and feel great in a bathing suit on vacation!! LOL
Seems the larger you are here, the more likely you are to land a wealthy, good looking husband!! Not that mine is bad at all…I love Steven…but I’m not sure he has ever revered me for my weight!!!
Check this one out. In Mauritania…it is a man’s goal to marry a woman who “fills his house”. “If she is big, she gives the house importance”.
Woo-hoo!
HEY, Maybe we should start our own country!!!

Virginia Tech Horror

Hi all…
I am in LA…stuck… because of the nor’easter.
I’m sure that you all know why I delayed my flight,
there was not a chance that I was flying into it!! LOL
In any event I turned on my TV this morning and am HORRIFIED to watch the events unfolding at Virginia Tech. I am so upset I can barely compose myself.
There are no words. I just wanted to share the pain that I am feeling
for all the friends and families of these young adults;
innocent victims just cut down in the prime of their lives.
I am sending my heartfelt condolences.

Political Correctness

Hi gang….just checking in and hope everyone had a nice Easter or Passover holiday. I’m in LA right now running around with Victoria Jackson and we have had some meetings about a show. Everyone wants shows where people compete with one another these days like Project Runway, Top Model, American Idol, Dancing Shows etc. If you know me….you know this genre is NOT up my alley after celebrity fit club!!! LOL
One of these shows is enough in a career!!! Oh well, maybe in another era I’ll return!! LOL
My friend, Vinny Pastore (Big Pussy on the Sopranos), was so excited to originally be on this season of Dancing with the Stars that he actually danced a dance with me when we did the Keith Ablow Show together…. until the reality of the show struck him and the work that he had to do hit him in the face. He was gone in a week!!! LOL
Other than this…I’ve been actively listening to all the furor over the Imus situation. I think he said a really stupid thing which I believe he is truly sorry about. I don’t think that he should be fired…I think that the discussion that has come up re: race and women is very important and extremely relevant. I think that he is sorry and I think this mistake would have done wonders to promote sensitivity and tolerance moving forward with him at the helm of the initiative!!!
I also wanted to make a comment here…that I think that people who have weight problems should start speaking up too!!! We are the ACCEPTABLE TARGETS of people’s bigotry. It is not acceptable for people to continue to take potshots at us either. There are a ton of hypocrites out there who need to be challenged and we need to speak up too….
Any thoughts??????????????

Courtney Love

I cannot believe what I just saw watching both THE INSIDER and ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT. Both shows showed a new photo of Courtney Love where she is so horribly thin, wearing a bikini…that it looks like she is really sick. Both shows stated that she looked fabulous. It is journalism like this that helps to make people sick with eating disorders. There was nothing fabulous about this picture. She has lost 45 pounds since Dec and I think that there might be something seriously wrong with her. She doesn’t look well at all. To tout this as being sexy is unacceptable and I think both shows should be taken to task. I for one am getting online and sending a message of serious dismay. What are these people thinking?! I don’t even think that she’s a size 2 anymore and considering her history of obsessive/compulsive addictions…maybe there should be a whole lot more concern!!!
