the Sorry state of Sororities!

Hello Friends of Wendywear!!!
I guess you may have thought that I’d fallen off the face of the earth, but I haven’t…hereI am back again, with plenty to say!!!
I hope that you are all back and settled after all the holidays and that you are all doing great. With that in mind…there are a bunch of kids over at DePauw University outside of Indianapolis who aren’t doing so great. Last Sunday, on the front page of the New York Times, there was an article about a sorority called Delta Zeta that was having some problems recruiting on the campus- they just weren’t hitting their numbers. The National Organization of Delta Zeta decided to step in and that in the best interest of the sorority, they would re-interview all 34 girls to understand why. After the interviews were conducted, 22 of the girls were dismissed…all were either on the overweight side, handicapped or non-white. The reason for this, they wanted women that they deemed more socially adept who would be more involved with the fraternities on campus.
In other words, they weren’t attractive enough for some botoxed bimbo who made this decision. Instead of working with these girls to implement a new marketing strategy together that might work and be acceptable for all involved, it was just easier for the National Chapter to toss them out.
This is beyond upsetting to me and completely symptomatic of the times that we are living in. These girls were treated shabbily and with none of the respect that should have been afforded them, especially since they were all sisters in good standing. Of the 12 sisters that remained, 6 stepped down and left in solidarity with the expelled 22. The article mentions that most of the women were quiet and timid by nature, all of them smart women and taking classes centered around mathematics and sciences; these girls represent some of the best and the brightest of their generation. To me…this action is not only discriminatory…but also sets the women’s movement back 50 years.
Tell me what you think!!
I think that people are very insensitive these days and that this FATPHOBIC atmosphere that we are subjected to daily must stop NOW!!
Love and Hugs

I think that’s terrible! Did they even THINK about what their actions would say about their organization? Those girls should get together and start something new - an organization NOT based on superficial standards. What are we, in grammar school? Puh-leeze.
I kinda found this site on accident, but I’m glad I saw this. Thanks for sharing!

As a mother, I am terrified by this. My Daughter is only 7 but she is allready consumed with emotional issues because she is not one of the “popular” girls at school.Parents need to look more closely at how their children treat others, and they need to make every effort to teach them to be accepting of all people, not just the pretty people. And thankfully, my lil girl allready sees that most of the girls that are considered “popular” are mean, and hateful, and also very judgemental of the girls that are different, and she is able to see how nice and sweet and adorably special she is. Take Care and God Bless!
