Totie Fields, Plastic Surgery and Food

Posted on September 5, 2006

Hi Everyone…
It was Labor Day weekend and so I decided not to labor around my home or feel belabored in any way - which means to do nothing in my book!!! As much as I try, it’s hard for me to just sit around and hang out, so I decided to grab an old book and read for a bit.
As crazy as this may sound, the book I grabbed fortuitously was by one of the late, but great, people that I idolize in my life Totie Fields.

If you don’t know about Totie, she was definitely one of us. She brought the world so much humor and laughter but unfortunately died younger than she should have. You see, even with all the people who loved her, and all the laughter that she brought to others, it turns out the she was completely unhappy in her own skin. She wanted to have a face lift, even though she was diabetic and it was opposed by every single doctor she consulted with.
Finally, she found someone in Connecticut who said that he would do it…and she died due to complications from diabetes, during surgery.

What a complete shame. It really disturbs me that so many people feel compelled to have to surgically fix them-selves. I can understand if there is a medical reason for this….but at the end of the day, WE NEED TO LOVE OURSELVES ON THE INSIDE, NOT THE OUTSIDE.
It really is starting to scare me the lengths that people are willing to go, and the end result sometimes is so horrific, I have no idea what people are thinking.
But anyway, just my ramblings!!!

Anyway…I wanted to share with you a chapter in Toties book called
“I Think I’ll Start on Monday” :-) Can anyone relate to this!!! LOL
From The Great Totie Fields

Five Practical Reasons For Not Going On A Diet
1. It’s very impolite to leave food on your plate.
2. America is supposed to be the best fed nation in the world. Why make us look bad?
3. Fish, meat and vegetables maybe chemically polluted. The U.S. Government has NEVER found mercury in a chocolate layer cake.
4. Food is synonymous with love. If you diet, you are depriving yourself of much needed affection.
5. Sara Lee, Laura Scudder, Betty Crocker and Mr. Hershey are sincere, hard working Americans. Check your conscience. Do you really want to take a living away from these people?
So have a laugh on Totie today.

I’ll write again soon….I have to tell you about my trip to LA with Victoria Jackson!!
Love and Hugs
Wendy

I am old enough to remember the remarkable Totie Fields. What a funny lady she was!

It is time for me to try to finally get serious about losing weight. I am hoping for your support as it seems you love to eat as much as I do.

Take care, Wendy. I’m counting on your support.

I remember Totie so well. She appeared on Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights and on the Tonight Show regularly. I clearly remember her boufant hairdo, lonnnnnng fingernails, and pretty dresses in my mind’s eye and hear her slightly raspy voice in my head. She was wonderful!

  5. Wendy Says:

    Hi Sue, Hi Gail!

Glad to hear you are Totie lovers like myself!
She rocked and ruled. LOL. Her big hair and her big nails were nothing compared to her BIG BEAUTIFUL spirit.
Sue, your recounting of her on the Ed Sullivan Show is genius. Thank you.
And Gail, I am here for your support.
We are all in this together.
    I promise.

    Hi Wendy!

Remember that hilarious scene in Woody Allen’s “Sleeper?” He was in the future and requested some health food to eat. The scientists turned to each other and said, ‘didn’t they know in the past about the health benefits of chocolate pies’ or something to that effect. It was a HILARIOUS scene.

Thank you for this neat website! Enjoyed you on Neil Cavuto but he was RUDE! He wouldn’t let you finish your thoughts!

    Love ya’
    Kathy

  7. Jodi Says:

Oh and Sue, I too remember her on Ed Sullivan and the Tonight Show. In my book, that is when even it too was enjoyable, I guess you can tell, I do not think it is any more !!! I miss Johnny !!!! In fact, I miss everything about the good ole days…..LOL
Thanks Wendy for the site…..I think I am going to love it here !!!!!

    Luv Ya,

hi Kathy…Hi Jodi…as you can both tell, I am hoping that this site becomes so much more than just a clothing site. We have lots of work to do…but we are beyond excited about all of it!!
So many wonderful memories aren’t there?
We will talk about plenty moving forward too, I promise.
I did want to say though, that Neil Cavuto is Awesome and one of my most favorite people in the world. It may have sounded like he was rude, but he only wanted to get me back on track for the short amount of time I had for my segment. He is totally a friend of our site and is going to have me back as soon as I have more to say.
Its not always what it seems on tv.
    Trust me, he’s a love!!
    Hugs
